This chapter provides an overview of the materials from which a composite can becomposed, and their most important properties. First we shall determine what a compositeactually is. Various definitions of composites may be used:• Acombination of a stronger and a weaker material’• Amaterial composed of different parts’• Acombination of two materials’The above definitions pose some problems. The first two leave us without an answer tothe question: “Why make such a combination?”. The third definition implies that alloys, two–component adhesives and solutions are composites.
